I have a mesh in the right Pelvic area where thy put it for an incarcerated right femoral hernia and it feels really tight. I try stretching it every day. I also have some nerve pain if I pressed around the edge of it. It just doesn’t feel right.
Hope you continue to heal and feel well.
Be well.Mel

That’s a tough question to answer about letting the first surgeon do it. How comfortable did you feel with him or her? Who diagnosed the second hernia? There are many top hernia specialist that you can find on this support group. Just Google your state and perhaps you can get some names of some top hernia surgeons to consult with. Which state do you live in maybe others on this board can chime in and give you some referrals. Wishing You well.

if you don’t mind me asking what are the symptoms that you are feeling that lead you to believe it’s the mesh. Did you set a date for removal yet? I’m 4 months post op and having some issues and pain. I want to give it more time and am addressing some other Pelvic abdominal causes for pain. My dr ordered a CT scan with oral contrast that I will
have done soon even though the thought of drinking that stuff makes me sick!
Wishing you well.

Has she had any MRIs done? I would at least take her to a hernia specialist and if he orders an MRI make sure he reads it and not rely solely on the radiologist. With my first MRI ordered by my gynecologist they missed the hernia. I then went to a hernia specialist and he ordered it again from
his hospital where he has a relationship with the radiologist and they are trained to look for it. The MRI was done with valsalva maneuver which is bearing down while taking the image and makes it a little easier to see the hernia. I guess this would be the route to go to rule out hernia. At least you will know one way or the other and then see how to proceed.
best of luck to you. Please let us know how it goes.

If you have the resources I would contact her office and at least start a dialogue. She’ll definitely steer you in the right direction.
Best of luck

So sorry you are having such pain. Obviously this needs to be addressed. You can’t continue along this path. Try the search bar here to look for top hernia specialists in your state. Hopefully someone else will read this and have suggestions. Where are you located? Would you travel out of state?
Best of luck to you.

Thank you for responding. I am seeing my Pelvic pain specialist tomorrow to have him weigh in on PFD. I also have the script for the CT scan with oral contrast. I would prefer the MRI as I don’t do well drinking the contrast but don’t feel I can call him to debate which imaging to a do.
If it’s not recurrence and the nerve is not entrapped…. just irritated then it should get better with time as will the seroma.
If the seroma has become encapsulated is it difficult a to correct?
Also, can PFD be this painful? Perhaps the surgery made the muscles more sensitive. Ever since the surgery I feel a tightness on the hernai side. I was actually afraid to stretch but after a while the doctor cleared me to do gentle stretching.
Is it normal to feel tightness after mesh repair and is there anything I can do to loosen the feeling?
Sorry for all the questions but I appreciate your response.
Thank you

MemberFebruary 19, 2017 at 2:33 pm in reply to: 4 months post incarcerated femoral hernia surgeryThe entire right Pelvic area is sore and throbbing and I haven’t even gotten out of bed yet. Let’s see what happens after breakfast. Before they diagnosed me with hernia my gyn had me treated for PFD. The physical therapy and trigger point injections made things worse. Can this be PFD? I need to see a real hernia specialist in NJ or even travel to NYC. Any suggestions? Is CT scan with liquid contrast better than MRI in picking up mesh problems or recurrent hernia? The seroma area is still sore and slightly swollen. It gets worse by end of day and there is discoloration at the site. I was getting better and feeling pretty good a month ago and now things have taken a turn.

I am having issues at 4 months post femoral hernia surgery and am at my wits end. What type of hernia did you have? Will they be removing the mesh?
All the best to you. -

MemberFebruary 18, 2017 at 10:12 pm in reply to: Can hernias cause pelvic pain and the appearance of being pregnant?Hernias can cause pain and they can also make you bloated. Especially by the end of the day when you’ve done all your walking. My cousin who recently had twins has the same situation and was told to watch and wait. They also suggested waiting until after she finishes having babies to do the surgery…..providing she is not in pain and can wait.
I am not sure if this is the answer to your problem or even the correct answer. I am only relaying what recently happened with my cousin who was diagnosed with 2 ventral hernias.
Wishing you the best. I hope others can answer you here. -

MemberFebruary 18, 2017 at 9:23 pm in reply to: 4 months post incarcerated femoral hernia surgerySo I went to the surgeon yesterday. He felt around examine me and had me cough. He said he didn’t feel
a hernia. I told him about the nerve pain and he explain d that the way he did the mesh there could be no nerve entrapment. He said that the nerve could be irritated and to give it more time as it takes a long time to heal. He very quickly saw the area where the seroma was/is and was a little baffled by the appearance. Although the seroma had gone down considerably there appears to be discoloration about the size of a quarter near my belly button. It actually looks bruised. He palpated it and felt something still there. I also had pain and tenderness when he pressed. He thinks that the seroma might have encapsulated itself and I might need to have it addressed. Again he said to give it some more time for the seroma to continue to heal. I told him about the pain after the bowel movement and assured me it was not hernia. He said that everything felt good. He said that if the pain continued I could have a CT scan with the contrast that you drink. He actually gave me the script for it so I could decide when to have it done if the pain continued.
So this morning after a very easy and soft BM the pain slowly returned. I took half of a soma to relax those muscles and layed down with a hot water bottle for a while. It’s now mid afternoon and the pain is worse from walking around. I have pain in my groin, throbbing in my Pelvic area and shooting pain down my sciatica…also inside of thigh. Also, I seem to be more bloated and swollen as my jeans are tight .Same pain as before the surgery but a little less than right before my surgery when the pain was unbearable.
I just don’t know what to do. I know I am not imagining this.
I feel like I am going around in circles. It took months of pain before I got the femoral hernia diagnosis. I can’t do this again.
Any thoughts?

Hi Ziggy,
I had a similar situation and it turned out to be a fatty femoral hernia. It wasn’t picked up on my first MRI. I wound up going to NYC to a hernia specialist as I suspected something was wrong. He sent me for a new MRI at his hospital. This MRI was different. It was done with a valsalva maneuver. The technician told me to bear down and hold my breath. He took the image when I was pushing down.
The doctor I went to called me to tell me I had an incarcerated femoral hernia. Because of insurance I did not let him so my surgery. When I went to a reputable in network doctor for a consult he looked at the MRI and said he wasn’t convinced I had a hernia. Then he did the exam and had me cough and turn my head in different directions. He looked at the MRI again and said he could feel it. At that point it had started to finally show in my pelvic area but for months it was not visible from the outside.Prior to figuring out it was a hernia i was being treated for pelvic floor muscle spasms with physical therapy which made it worse and eventually trigger point injections right into the area which also made it worse. One saturday the pain was horrific so I put an emergency call into my gyn. I bascially told him something was really wrong and i insisted on an MRI. It tooks months to get a diagnosis and many doctor visits to different specialists. I did this on my own. One doctor was even upset that I was in to see him. Like it was a waste of his time. He was an orthopedic surgeon and said I clearly did not have any hip tears or hip problems so “why was I there”.
Don’t give up. You could have a fatty hernia that is causing you pain. Maybe you can get a referral to a Florida doctor from this site.Best of luck to you.

MemberFebruary 16, 2017 at 1:13 am in reply to: 4 months post incarcerated femoral hernia surgerySo it seems the rest of my post is missing….oh well….here goes again….
I did some walking about 3-4 weeks after surgery and eased up when it felt that i had over done it and experienced some pain. About 3 months after surgery I began doing some light exercises at home and slowly started the elliptical machine. There were times I felt some pain so I eased off again.
About 2 weeks ago I felt a dull ache in the pelvic area where I had the hernia surgery. I had even more pain after a bowel movement and it continued to ache all day. I had an appointment with my pelvic pain doctor and mentioned it to him. He said it might have been an isolated incident and to give it another 2 weeks and discuss with him if it continued. So here I am 2 weeks later and the same thing happened but the pain was worse and lasted all day. I was unable to leave the house this past Monday. Tuesday some more pain but not as bad. My pelvic doctor is on vacation so I decided to call the surgeon for a follow up. It is now almost 4 months post surgery. I will be seeing the surgeon Friday. The other pain I have is in that same area but it feels like a nerve pain. Only when I touch or press in a certain area I get a sharp shooting pain. The first time I noticed it was a few months ago and thought it was just post surgical healing. I had even commented about it on this website. The tender spots are down low in the pelvic area near the groin sort of where the border of the mesh might be. I don’t want to get ahead of myself but am obviously concerned. There was a period of time that I didn’t have pain after bowel movements and was so excited because I felt the surgery really helped that part of my pain. The surgeon had explained to me that the fatty hernia was probably pushed through with that forceful bowel movement I had. He said the fat was really jammed into the femoral canal.
I am not sure what is going on. Maybe Dr Towfigh can chime in…especially if she remembers me from a few months ago. At 4 months I don’t think my seroma is completely gone either but that’s not where I am experiencing the pain. No bowel movement today so I can’t comment on pain afterwards but will wait and see what tomorrow brings. I’m watching my diet, still continuing with stool softeners, using a squatty potty and not straining.

Hi Sue,
Would love to. I’m glad you’re doing OK. I’m sort of in the same boat with my husband’s health. I’m kind of glad I had the surgery when I did because I knew that my husband would be needing treatment around this time and I would have to be better. Unfortunately he has a chronic leukemia and needs to be treated now. we’re we’re starting a new drug this week hopefully he’ll tolerate it OK bwill have to see how it goes. Just in time for the holiday.
It’s not easy especially when we have our own health concern so I understand what you’re going through.
Hang in there. Hope everyone gets better quickly!

Hi Sue,
Somehow I responded to this a few days ago but it disappeared. Thursday was eight weeks since my surgery and I’m feeling much better than I did a month ago. I still have the Seroma that’s quite tender especially the one near my belly button. I also seem to have a sharp pain down low somewhere near where the border of the mesh is. It only hurts if I press on it in this one little spot. I feel a sharp shooting pain. I hope it resolves.
I’m doing a lot more and I am up and about but I’m still not 100% healed. If I do too much I feel it the next day.
I hope you are feeling better and continuing to heal. I hope your daughter is better to.
Please keep me posted.
All the best,
Mel

Ditto your sentiments on the mesh.
I’m sorry your daughter is not well. I hope her situation resolves itself soon. That definatley adds more stress.
I think I have to cut back on walking because I feel like I stirred things up. I’m having more discomfort and swelling on the right side again. My gut is not back to journal either. I guess it takes more time. I don’t eat a lot of the foods you mentioned but I have been having a half glass of wine with dinner. I don’t drink regular coffee but I do indulge in a tiny bit of espresso because I like the taste. I’ve probably been having a little more sugar than I normally do but nothing crazy. I haven’t gotten back on probiotics yet.
Although I was able to get back into my jeans they still
Feel snug around the waist from swelling.Yesterday was a long day for me and it’s taken its toll
on me today. I wore shoes with a little heal which I haven’t done in a long time. I started to feel pain in the surgical area and needed to sit down and rest. I also have fibromyalgia so today feels like I’ve been hit by a train.I hope both our tummy woes settle down. Im sure thanksgiving dinner didn’t help. Back to a regular diet!
I’m not sure if my friend had a laparoscopy the second time around. I think the first was open incision when she had her cesarean.
I hope you have a better day. I guess we both need to give it more time. Im going to rest as much as I can today and maybe attempt walking tomorrow depending on how I feel.
I hope things get better for your daughter too.
Be well.

Hi Sue.
I’m slowly healing and feeling better. Thanks for asking.I still have the seroma that’s hard and causes pain. Especially, when i do too much. I still have soreness on the lower right side where they placed the mesh. If I gently press it still feels very tender.
All things considered it is better. I went to the surgeon last week for a check up and he said to give it some more time. he encouraged more walking so I started walking around my neighborhood at a good pace for about 35 minutes. I get right sided pain about 15 minutes into the walk but keep going. He discouraged me from starting the elliptical machine yet. He said he wants the mesh to fully integrate and doesn’t want to do any movement that might fold over the mesh. He preferred walking.
He gave me the name of a good gastro Doctor which I hope to see for an IBS consult. I’m sure it’s flared from stress and surgery.
This entire surgery really took a toll. I didn’t think it would take this long to heal. In sure with time it will be ok. I’m still not back to myself. At least the pain I was having from the hernia before surgery is not there!
How are you feeling? Are you back to your normal yet?
Wishing you well.Mel
