Feels like stabbing pains on top of the inguinal canal, very concentrated. I was virtually pain free, this is a massive setback to me as due to other health issues anxieties are very high. I have had another operation in the pelvic area back in January.

I wen to see a surgeon some time ago, and he was very keen to perform laparoscopic repair with a plastic mesh, am a bit reluctant to have it done for obvious reasons. Unfortunately, this seems to be the only option here in UK. I have found a couple of hospitals in Europe who can operate using biological meshes, but don’t want to have any unnecessary operations done if this is not a cause of my pains.

Could a small inguinal hernia be that painful? Can gentle exercise like jogging aggravated it, and if I give it time and rest, would that go away again?

    Thank you kindly.

I have seem a surgeon regarding this yesterday, and he suggested immediate laparoscopic operation using mesh. I’m a bit reluctant as symptoms seem to be improving on their own very slowly, last month I were struggling to walk more than half a mile, now can go for a 2 mile walk no problem. I have been doing pelvic floor exercises daily, so this might be a factor in recovery. Still not perfect, as constant pain is there, but wondered if anyone had their hernia pains improve to the point where they did not need an op anymore? Thank you for your comments in advance.

Hello Chaunce1234 Thank you for your reply and links, I will check them out. Ultrasound showed a small inguinal hernia, they mostly focused on this, rather than sports hernia aspect. I might ask for a second opinion and more ultrasounds done, would ultrasound pick up sports hernia?

Initially pain started shortly after another operation, prior to that I was running and exercising a couple of times a week. I went for a gentle jog, and the pain started in the inguinal canal reaching all the way to the testicle. It also radiated to my upper leg. It doesn’t hurt when I go to the toilet or cough, but sometimes it hurts just in one spot, at the top of my inguinal canal. I went for a gentle swim a couple of days ago and the pain intensified for about a day.

I’m 38yo, was in an above average physical shape, unfortunately currently dealing with other physical condition, which puts a strain on me mentally 🙁

I have been diagnosed with a sports hernia, my inguinal canal feels tender nearly all the way to the testicle, have got pains in my pubic bone where no2 is on the diagram, but my ultrasound also showed a small inguinal hernia. My doc is reluctant to operate at this stage, told me to see if it settles, but am wondering if it is possible to have sports and inguinal hernia at the same time? Or are my pains due to inguinal hernia?

My doc doesn’t want to operate yet, he said that sports Hernia can resolve itself if you follow exercise regime. I went to see a physiotherapist, who gave me a list of strengthening exercises to follow daily. I also found a PT, will see her soon. It’s only been 3rd day, but feel a bit better already.

Mine came out really well on ultrasound. They could see it moving as well

Thank you for your message drtowfigh. Left testicle was removed as I had tumours which luckily were not cancerous, ever since then had pain in the pubic area, and after ultrasound it was discovered that I have got a small hernia on the right side.

Since I never had pains pre-operation, part of me thinks I am still healing, pain will settle and so I don’t want to do anything hasty. Yes I think my nerve was cut as I feel numbness and weird sensations.

Problem is that any literature I read, it always says that it takes approximately 6 weeks to heal, I am nearly 4 months past and pain still persist 🙁

Was the other operation done laparoscopically? Have you tried to do anything to treat the primary symptom (pain) like a nerve block?

Does laying down flat on your back help the pain? Or does anything else make it better or notably worse?

Hi Chaunce, no, it was an open surgery, they’ve hacked into my inguinal canal. I am taking very small doses of antidepressants and they seem to be working for nerve pains, which seem to be changing regularly. First it was just a solid pain, then feeling as if I were burned, now unpleasant feeling and numbness. Yes I feel virtually pain free first thing in the morning, it starts hurting if I wear tighter clothes and after a day of walking.

If it came to it and I needed hernia repair, what are your opinions on disovable meshes?

Did they do any exploratory surgery at the time? Was the right side examined?

Maybe the scarring on the left side is pulling on the right, causing pain. January is not that long ago. Have you tried any methods of reducing the material in the canal? I don’t know if it was a real physical effect, but I seemed to get some relief from my direct hernia by elevating my pelvis above the upper half of my body. It takes the pressure off of the area. It’s actually what they do during laparoscopy to create a space in the abdomen, tilting the body, letting the intestines slide downward. Of course, there’s no CO2 to help but it might offer temporary respite.

    Good luck.

Hello Good Intentions, thank you for your response. No, haven’t had exploratory surgery, just ultrasound. There is a bit of scarring, it was an open surgery, they have cut into my inguinal canal. I am still a bit numb on the left, looks like my nerve was cut in the process. I am fine first thing in the morning after decent sleep, was also prescribed small doses of antidepressants to take the edge off nerve pains, seems to be working. That is interesting what you said about scarring pulling on the right side. If this is the case, I wonder if scar will stretch eventually and pain will go away. Will read more about it. Have a nice weekend.

    Hi Good intentions,

Thank you so much for your message. I’m in a bad place as my pains started after another operation back in January, part of me thinks that pain is still to do with that op and not hernia, and probably hang on and don’t do anything drastic at this stage.

  • Hi All,

What are your views on dissolvable meshes? I have got a very painful inguinal hernia and want to get it done asap, but wanted to be more educated about this subject.

Thank you for any answers in advance.

I have a small inguinal hernia around 1cm. Doc said that small hernias can be more troublesome sometimes compared to the larger ones. He scheduled me for a CT scan of spine as well to rule out anything else. Good luck Lucky, hope you get your answer soon

Hi Chaunce I had a ultrasound done, which confirmed a small hernia near my groin area on the right side. It is not really visible, as I have not got a bulge. Before that I were in above the average fitness, running and cycling regularly, and I can only assume this is what brought it on as on occasion I over exercised.

I have had orchiectomy on left testicle back in January, and seems like my issues started since then. I’m no medical expert or claim to have extensive knowledge in this field, but looking at diagrams and pictures on google, there is a femoral nerve in that area which extends all the way to the foot. My theory is that hernia must be pressing on that nerve. I woke up today and feeling as if I were 100% fine, but it usually gets worse throughout the day. Just want my old life back 🙁

  • Thank you very much for your email. Does make me think twice. Either way, I need to have something done as I cannot function anymore. Luckily my hernia is small, but for some reason almighty painful. My thigh is on fire and leg tingling all over. I previously had extensive stitching done after an accident and that was nowhere near as painful as this. I will be insistent on having disolvable mesh put in. Have been researching best surgeons here in UK, can go with our NHS and have standard incision/mesh, but luckily I have also got private insurance, which will hopefully give me more options like laprascopy and disovable materials.

Thank you kind sir again and praying for a quick resolution for us all.

Hello rosesnrubies, how are you doing? Have you got any updates?

  • Hi Khernia,

Thank you for your message. I have read a lot about meshes, and will discuss my options with doctor tomorrow. Apparently majority of the problems experienced were with the old meshes, newer ones are better tolerated by body. Saying that, I will be insistent on disolvable mesh, they last for approximately 2 years. I already had an orchiectomy on my left testicle back in January, so this will be my second op this year. Thank you again and God bless 🙂

Yes Lucky, same thing. I’m OK when I am lying down, as soon as I start walking, tingling returns. I also am getting pains all down to my foot. It must be hernia related as never had this problem before. I’m going to see my doctor tomorrow, will discuss it with him

  • Hello Khernia,

Just read your post, feel sorry about your issues you are having. Might not be entirely relevant to you, but wanted to ask you a question. I’m in a similar situation to you in terms that I am wery active, and have recently developed hernia, most likely caused by excercise. I had a scan done and it is inguinal hernia, but am also having really weird symptoms as well. I am getting pins and needles all the way to my foot, am struggling to walk longer than half a mile due to severe pain near femoral region. When I’m resting or staying in bed, pain and leg tingling goes away.

Question is did you experience similar symptoms with your hernia? Although you have issues now, did the leg tingling went away after operation? Hope you will find your answer and successful resolution soon
