It’s a great program. It promotes funding to surgeons who find there is a problem that they can help solve with innovation. It’s surgeon-centric and therefore patient-centric.

I think that the article just shows what’s been known across any business with a large revenue stream. The money takes precedence over the original goals once there is enough flowing. Keep the revenue stream flowing..

Even the societies are getting caught up in making money as having priority over patient welfare. They’re mimicking popular get-rich-quick television shows.

Shark Tank. As the popular saying of the day goes, when looking at something that exists but is not-quite-right – “It is what it is”.

How did the SAGES Shark Tank become something nefarious?

I looked this Shark Tank over briefly. It looks like a great program. Providing funding for stimulating innovation in surgery? Who wouldn’t want that. If a company makes bad products and doesn’t care about patients, that’s another issue and I’d think would lead to that companies demise as surgeon’s catch on, and patients sue them.

It’s an example of the drift toward selling products, rather than improving patient care. Something to be wary of. The technology companies that will be supporting things like Shark Tank don’t really care about patient welfare. It’s why so many bad mesh products have made it to market and are still there. A focus on money over patients. The patients are the revenue sources.

I’m just giving an objective view from the outside world.

The Emerging Technology Session will be re-branded as the NBT Session, retaining the same focus of the prior Emerging Tech Session. In 2021, a major and impactful change to the Shark Tank is being considered. Shark Tank will include a significant monetary award for the most promising innovation. Stay tuned for more details.”
