Well I think I got my hernia during a martial arts move and I gave it up for 10 years (it was the high kicks I was afraid of) one of the reasons I’m glad I got it repaired was so that I could go back to Martial Arts. I kept lifting weights during my ten year waiting period though.

  • Yes, Saro–I did convince my surgeon to use absorbable sutures but in the end I would have gone with prolene if necessary. It’s not like the mesh problems.

Hi, Gab–I had my operation at St. Joseph Hospital in Bloomington Illinois. Doctor Weiland is a general surgeon who was willing to do the surgery without mesh, which was great because my insurance paid ($250 in network co-pay) and so far, so good. I’ve got a big scar but no pain after 3 month–if I didn’t have the scar I wouldn’t know I had surgery. Which I had put off for 10 years.

I too thought I had an ovarian cyst when my hernia was first discovered. I noticed it only sometimes and I’m not sure if that coincided with ovulation but eventually my GP had me cough and said, “oh it’s a very small hernia.” I was relieved actually because a lump on ovaries not always good news. I waited over 10 years to get mine fixed because for a long time it stayed very small and occasionally. In the last three years it started to grow and there was no mistaking it.

Hi, I’m female and did not have any nerves cut during my no mesh inguinal hernia not the same but 2 weeks after surgery I did get similar symptoms to what you are describing in the same general areas–that did go away but two months I still have some stinging and itching the area. I’m assuming it will go away but that’s just an assumption.

I had inguinal no mesh a month ago and it has only been this week that I am without numbness and nerve pain in my leg, so right now I’d go with normal. It got slowly better for me. Very slowly better.

DrBrown Thank you. Yes. I actually (3 weeks tomorrow) feel more pain this week than I have and a stinging in the upper thigh. I am going to contact the surgeon but I think it’s still early in the healing process and I’ve had such little pain so far–I’m more worried about the extreme fatigue. I’ve heard other people mention the stinging in upper thigh after inguinal surgery–why is that–nerve endings? Seems a little away from the hernia itself.

I got my done 3 weeks ago by a general surgeon in Bloomington who was willing to do no mesh. I couldn’t wait any longer.

Wow! So needed. I called there several times asking about no mesh, and not getting a response.

Tino_7 I would not travel that far the same day–nearby hotel and tv for a least one night would be my recommendation. If you have surgery on a Monday or Friday your friend should be good to stay two nights. (I’d go for Monday since the doctor would be reachable the next day if a problem). Also no one else has said the gym would be OK in that short of time. I’ve been told 6 weeks before lifting weight or yoga.

@kaspa–I think most surgeons will go with the prolene sutures for pure tissue repair unless specifically asked to use absorbable by their patients, which is what I requested knowing there is a greater risk for reoccurrence. My surgeon may very well end up saying “I told you so”, but because I know myself and my body, I thought it might resist a plastic material. I did trust my surgeon and if he refused the absorbable, I would have still had the repair done by him. The suture materials are not as problematic as the mesh, which I was definitely sure I would not take.

drtowfigh you mentioned about the reoccurrence rate for no mesh hernia surgery–has that ever been broken down by suture material? i.e. Prolene versus absorbable or silk? The Shouldice clinic uses wire and I’ve wondered if that hasn’t played into their low reoccurrence rate.

Oh. I didn’t even know that was a possibility. I wouldn’t have wanted that either. Hope I didn’t sign on that. I’ll ask on the follow-up.

I had left inguinal open no mesh surgery last Wednesday. So far, so good. Had the 72 hour nerve block and have been able to manage pain with tylenol and some natural remedies. I rested a lot, but went back to work (not physical labor work) today, five days later. Felt comfortable driving on day 3. Used. lots of ice packs. Still cautious about a lot of thing–not lifting, etc.

I did as Dr. Brown suggested and looked for a surgeon close to 60 because they have been trained in no mesh. I found one who was 58–a general surgeon with a good rep. We talked about what I wanted he said it was reasonable. I had the surgery last week and so far it seems good. I had to call around a lot to find him, so I encourage people to look more locally. This wasn’t exactly in my town but an hour away. BTW it isn’t recommended to put mesh in youth–so that’s another thing–some of the older docs end up operating on youth because some of the younger ones don’t know that stitching.

Anything you recommend to your patients, Dr. Brown? I’m on post-op day 3–open no mesh inguinal. It was a long lasting nerve block so I was told to take only tylenol. To that I added Curamin, under the tongue arnica, and last night a CBD tablet. Last night was a little rough and I’m a little worried about the nerve block wearing off.

As someone who has done watchful waiting with an asymptomatic smaller reducible hernia for 10 years, and who is going to have it surgically fixed tomorrow, I was supported by my GP and a surgeon in watchful waiting. It has grown in size this year and is starting to give me pain–I think I maybe could have done more exercises, used a truss, but the thing is now it is something that I need to attend to daily. My GP said “it’s probably time to get that fixed.” I trusted that more having been told it was fine to wait. I don’t think I’m in danger now but I worry. I think some of the answers of the surgeons might be that they work with anesthesiologists and maybe have more confidence in that. To me, one of the big benefits of open is no general anesthetic. So even though my hernia is larger now, I still would have waited. If I do have pain after the surgery, well that’s ten years less of pain. So I’m really glad the original surgeon offered waiting as an option.

Well, yes, I know plenty of people in my life who have had the surgery with mesh and are fine and haven’t had any problems, but we’ve certainly all read about complications from mesh–Dr. Brown, I thought you were somebody against using it. I think was I was trying to say, even in forums where we are going to get a skewed view of mesh problems, I have not heard the same type of complaint about the prolene sutures, which is actually heartening to me. I was thinking, yes, because it doesn’t travel and get as entangled in nerves. Did you mean to say “Complications from sutures are rare?” or is it really mesh you were referring to. Out of five people I know who had hernia surgery with mesh–only one had complications–so that’s a random study, but it doesn’t seem completely rare.
