The pin and needle pains are also in my left and right inguinal incision areas as well.Very little on the surface when it is in the incision areas it is deep. As I said before I can get a prick on the top of my foot and a second later it is in the incision area(s). I did not have any of this before the reocurrant symptoms….only after did the pins and needles start up.

Also, before my surgery I never had the symptoms.I have read on many forums of people with inguinal hernias that have the pin and needles in their legs.

I do from time to time get them on the hand or arm.Very little but once in a great while.

I have a thread on here call Pin Prick Sensation.Read that and let me know what you think. But my symptoms are recurrent type symptoms.I have already had repair with mesh.I am very curious what you find out.

So….does anyone else have this issue as well?I also wanted to ask Dr. Procter if he still reviews imaging sent to him? That way if I can’t find a doctor who does I can at least know what’s going on.Also it wouldn’t be bad as a second opinion.

I hate going back to a strenuous job but work is work.
    Thanks.

Symptoms now are pretty much the same.Today for example I stepped out of the shower with my left foot and as soon as I put pressure on it I got a stab pain on top of the foot for a split second then I had the same pain on the left incision area.Pain can be anywhere on the foot and legs. But always ends up on the left or right incision area and hurts deep within. So I never know what if any pain I might have while walking or being on my feet.

I still need to find a PCP.In the interim alot of personal drama has been going on and finished.I have no choice but to go back to work with this.I can’t find any employment in my previous occupation that is doable for multiple issues.

I am going back to school in fall now for post degree training then back to work. After I get my self registered for school I will seek out a PCP and go from there.

Good Intentions,we think alike on this subject.I have been sitting around thinking how to word my symptoms.I will be calling a few places as I need to find a PCP and go from there.Thank you very much and I couldn’t agree with you more on the subject matter.

I have noticed some of these pin and needle feelings in my upper body as well.Ugggh…..lol.What a mess our bodies can be.I just gotta keep my head up through all this cause it is all I can do.

    quote Good intentions:

Many people have problems with mesh. It’s unclear why. There are many different types of mesh and many different techniques for placing it. Generally, anecdotally, athletic people with low body fat have more problems with mesh. More chronic pain. You can find a many success stories and many horror stories. So many stories that there will be no clear “winners”, or losers. Recurrence is only one aspect of a successful hernia repair. The other big one is chronic pain.

So, your surgeon might have done you a favor, in the long run. If he is trained in the various mesh placement techniques and uses mesh, but he chose the modified Bassini repair he must have thought you were a good candidate for it. Mesh is generally considered to have a lower recurrence rate, and seems to be the “safe” route to take, based only on recurrence rates.

You should really be focused on the long term, not the next two weeks, or two months, or the fact that you’re losing your conditioning. If you go too fast and create problems you could have serious regrets, and be out of running for much longer. Maybe forever if things go really bad. Hernia repair is simple in principle and description but complex in practice. I was a very active runner and soccer player until I had laparoscopic mesh implantation with Bard Soft Mesh. It ruined me for athletics and running and hiking. It’s hard to say that you’d be better off with mesh implantation.

    Good luck.

I agree.I am very sorry to hear how you are now sidelined from physical activity.I too am ruined for athletics and it has cost me my life as a personal trainer/bodybuilder.

My doctor did a great job overall with my mesh repair but now 8 years later the mesh says otherwise. One thing I wish my doctor didn’t do though was insist on mesh since I wanted to return to the gym.Since this hernia issue was new to me I felt rushed and went by his word.

Was your mesh implanted openly? The only reason I ask is you want to make sure you have your mesh removed the same way it was out in. I know Dr. Tomas does open removals not laparoscopic removals. There is another gentleman on a forum I belong to who had hi snwsh removed by dr. Tomas and a Desarda repair. Tomas was able to get 75% of the mesh out and I think the gentleman is back to work and satisfied with the surgery.

Yes,my bilateral repair was done openly.

“if you get implanted with mesh but that if it does your really screwed. You have a permanent device intertwined in your body that isn’t meant to come out. You will face a medical community that will pass you off as you try to figure out what is causing you your pain. And eventually you may be faced with having to roll the dice on getting the mesh removed.”

This is me now.I have been in touch with multiple doctors who will not even do an MRI, Ultrasound, cat scan and just play it off as it is in your head and that is part of mesh repair. And the ones who do repair tell me I need a super specialist for recurrence.

    Wow….

I thought I was the one to beat the mesh odds with how perfect everything went.I don’t drink anymore,I do not use tobacco products or use drugs. And my body fat % is at no more than 12 year round.

I helped someone pick up a 67 pound garbage can(was weighed on a scale) and 33 days later I am here. And not to brag I am not weak in strength so I do not struggle to lift anything and I won’t lift anything if it is too heavy.

At this point I have been in contact with Dr.Robert Tomas with multiple questions and he has always answered me.I have been in contact with multiple patients of his as well.

At the end of this year I have a plan and if all goes well I will be taking a trip to Florida in a year or two.I gotta take what I can get….but the best of what I can get as well.

    I want my mesh out….period.

    quote ajm222:

Dr. Proctor – out of curiosity, do you tend to recommend mesh repair over non-mesh in a typical inguinal hernia patient? I am about to schedule surgery and it seems most surgeons I have spoken with obviously recommend mesh, even your colleagues. But no one seems to really know for sure what the incidence of recurrence is in non-mesh repairs these days or the complication rates beyond three years or so, and at three years it seems they are similar to mesh repairs. I had considered a non-mesh repair, but it seems most surgeons suggest the incidence of recurrence long-term is probably quite high, especially if you get it when younger like myself. And it sounds like recovery is much worse. And there is the fact that most surgeons rarely do non-mesh repair so the skill level and practice level is low which could impact effectiveness, especially given that it sounds quite complicated.

I know this forum is mostly filled with those who have had problems and a general ‘don’t use mesh ever’ attitude. But from what I can tell the actual surgeons posting here save for maybe one typically recommend mesh for the most part. Just wanted to clear that up and get your opinion on it. Would you generally recommend mesh repair to a younger patient with ‘typical’ inguinal hernia over non-mesh all else being equal, assuming it is done by a skilled and experienced surgeon who is very familiar with inguinal hernia repairs?

Don’t mean to hijack the thread. But it seemed somewhat related. I have a very clear bulge and starting to have symptoms when standing for long periods of time. Mainly just trying to convince myself that getting a mesh repair isn’t a terrible choice , while understanding clearly that complications are an unpredictable possibility.

If you read my posts you will see I had a perfect operation,a perfect recovery, and I was very careful in what I did afterwards as far as how much weight I lifted and such.
And yet 8 years later I am worse off now.I believe that it is not a matter of if the mesh will fail…..it is a matter of WHEN….it will fail.

I have researched so many forums now to find people with recurrence 5-16 years later and even 22+ years later. And most of these people said they did nothing to cause the mesh to fail.

If I could go back….I would have never had mesh put in.Now I am unemployed,no insurance….none that anyone accepts on here(Dr. Towfighs office wouldn’t accept it)and no money to at least get it out at those who do accept cash…

    Do not go with mesh

I don’t have any advice, but wanted to say that I am sorry you are going through this. I wish I had more to contribute than that. But big hugs! I am really sorry you’re dealing with the financial hardship in addition to pain. It just sucks 🙁

Thank you. I wish I had the financial support to help everyone here with their issues. At this point I can’t even help myself except to continue to look for employment that is doable. This city is really bad all around. I became very jaded after my 9 year old son died back in ’03.

I kept going.I became very bitter after his mom killed herself from that pain.I kept going.I abused alcohol for a long time.I beat that and kept going.

I am trying my best to keep going. I can’t even find the words to express how mentally and physically drained I am.I have chronic back pain that after 19 years doctors can’t find out what is wrong. But, I still move on.

Your words matter more than any dollar amount can provide.Sure, the world revolves on the mighty dollar. But to me….love is what matters most in life.Without it you are dead inside without any purpose. If I can get out of this mess I have been in contact with Dr. Robert Tomas and will proceed from there.

Big hugs back to you as well

Was the hernia repaired with mesh? I have recurrence I believe and all my symptoms came back plus new ones such as hip/waist pain but more of a dull slight numbish “feel” plus a tugging around the left side of the penis.

Did you go back to work since your repair or have you been just resting at home? If you’ve been back at work since repair I could see maybe a recurrence but then maybe just over exertion as well. If you’ve been just at home I would think the mesh(?) causing it. That is also another issue I have now too.

My toes on my right foot are numbish and I get spasms down my leg and they are really weird.

Symptoms somewhat back stretched a little and did some Psoas stretches.Felt good, too good as the lower back release was so good I fell asleep lol. Just scraping up change(yes, iam that broke) to get to the ER and see what is wrong.

If it is OP fine..better than inguinal hernia recurrence and I can plan my return to school fall ’18 and try to move on with life.If hernias again….no choice for the same plan to move on.I will not have them fixed as when I work I do not qualify for any insurance let alone able to afford it.

Will post back when and if I find out at the hospital what the hell is wrong with me.

You know,as many on here have found out…I can live with the pain.I have had chronic back pain for 19 years now along with depression. But the psychological effect this hernia has had on me is the worst….

    Thanks for reading.

Did basic stretching for three days and the last two none. And the last two days I have been 95% pain free. Will continue the stretching next week.So I am really hoping it is a form of osteitis pubis. I still might go to the hospital….just gotta play it day by day and see what happens.

Thank you for your time and response Dr. Procter. Like I mentioned to Dr. Towfigh you guys ROCK! This forum, your time, information and the fact actual doctors read AND respond to our questions is priceless. Most other forums usually just “trail” off and leave forum members hanging.Thanks.

Symptom update: When I sleep and lay on the left or right side the pressure is worse and radiates to the front of the hernia incisions. But no pain really just pressure especially on the right side. And before I’d wake up and be able to tell if I have to urinate…now I can barely tell.

The back pain comes and goes.Gas can be really hard to pass but I do pass and have bowel movements.Testicles still get a sharp pain through them here and there but mainly having to pass gas can make them hurt. Incision areas are pain free.Pain I had on front of left thigh/leg is gone

But on the back of my left leg from the bottom of the buttock down to a little past the knee has a slight burn and only does so in bed when tossing and turning.Urination is normal.

Iam going to wait and see as I can’t go back to my job as a automotive mechanic as I do alot of heavy lifting changing out tires. In the meantime I need to find employment that is less stressful.Getting insurance means being unemployed to qualify…no thanks,I do not want to take that route unless it is very necessary (symptoms get very bad and such.)
