The third photo does show the spermatic cord stuck to the mesh. It took about 15 minutes to get vas deferens separated from the mesh.

How was your mesh removed and how was the repair done..lap or open ? did the surgeon cut any nerves ?

I ended up losing my ilioinguinal and iliohypogasric but that’s nothing compared to the pain I was living with. Dr Brown opened me up along the scar from my last lap surgery 15 years ago, took the mesh out (which had become distorted inside of me and wrapped around my spermatic chord, also the first surgeon put a suture through my nerve) and sutured me up with silk. All the bruising has finally gone away after two weeks and the only pain I feel now is when I roll over on my right side.

Arkj93 I hope the surgery was a success. I am considering mesh removal with Dr Belyanski also. How is your recovery going. If there was a hernia present after removal did he put in new mesh or perform a tissue repair. Thanks

Silk Sutures no more mesh. I’m feeling fantastic brother absolutely fantastic! Still some pains but nothing constant like I did have

MeshMangledMerritt How are you doing ?

FAN-TAS-TIC mate! And getting stronger everday. The only pain I have is when I roll over on my right side or if I turn too sharp to the right. Still though nowhere near the constant state of pain I was living in for the past 15 years. It’s truly amazing the work DrBrown did. Still excited to see how things are when I’m healed fully from this but I have hope for the first time in a long time

Op report came in today. There was 3 reasons why I was having pain for 15 years following mesh repair surgery in 2005

1) mesh became distorted

2) mesh had wrapped around spermatic chord and vas defrens with impenged. Explains the pain during sex and why I haven’t been able to have kids

3) original doc put suture through ilioinguinal nerve

DrBrown fixed it! No joke I feel (3 days after surgery) like I’m a new body! I’m sore and bruised still yeah no doubt BUT the old sensations and other alien feelings are not present. It’s difficult to put into words unless you know and have felt it.

Today was the first day in 3 days since op I’ve been out of bed and holy cow I can’t even believe me today from me last week. It’s weird cause I don’t feel the me I’ve been the past 15 years. I feel reborn as cliche as that sounds.

I’m going to see Doc Brown Thursday and hopefully next month I can get surgery. I have a lot of the same issues you have and funny you mention thyroid issues. I’ve had an enlarged Thymus for years and doctors don’t know why. I wonder if it’s connected to the mesh? I get the achy joints too and if I eat too much or have a full stomach the pain gets worse. I had prolene mesh and a doctor I saw in 07 said he thinks mine folded over as well. I’ll know for sure soon and hopefully I can get back to normal too. I’m only 36 and feel so much older these past 15 years cause of this mesh

MeshMangledMerritt I’ve been having mesh issues and chronic pain for 15 years as well and am now into my mid 40’s. What tests, if any, did you have done in order to get the VA to approve your surgery? Did you have any specific tests that showed the mesh was related to your health issues? I’m having difficulty getting any doctor to look at me seriously and have been slowly losing hope that I’ll ever feel better, despite my symptoms matching typical problems for hernia mesh complications. Any help is much appreciated. Thank you.

Sent you a PM. Ultrasound and MRI from what I’ve read but really need a doctor who knows mesh to give it a check as they’ll know what they’re feeling

That is great news Merritt. Be ready for immediate positive results but a long slow climb back to where you think that you should be. You and your body have been compensating for the mesh pain for many years. Take your recovery slowly and carefully. Take the long view if you have setbacks. I only had my mesh in for three years but still had setbacks up to where I am now. It’s constant progress but I still have a lot of room ahead to be better.

Best of luck in your surgery.

Thanks GI! I do have questions. After 15 years with this what recovery am I looking at? what’s the likelihood of permanent things wrong with my body? Like if the mesh is adhered to more than my spermatic chord like my intestine what is the likelihood of those or parts having to be removed? Doc Brown told me from looking at my records I would need a nuerectomy. I’ve already had one nerve sacrificed from the original surgery what’s it like to have nerves removed? Is there any weird sensations that comes with that? Should be expect more, less or for things to stay the same? I’ve had one surgeon tell me removing the mesh there’s 80% chance it will make things better but 20% it won’t that it will make things worse including loss of my right testicle. I guess these are questions best asked to doc Brown in person but my memory sucks so I need to get it all down somewhere.

The most common reason for pain is the mesh or scarring of the nerves.
Ask your doctor to inject the mesh with lidocaine. If you feel better that will be strong evidence that removing the mesh will help.
If injecting the mesh does not help, then inject the ilioinguinal and the iliohypogastric nerves with lidocaine. If that helps then the nerves are a component of your pain.
Regards.

Thank you Doc! I’m still working on getting down there to see you. The VA did approve me for community care through the MISSION ACT, BUT my community care doctor has to refer me to you for the VA to cover it. I haven’t given up nor forgot and I’m doing all that I can to get there to see you.

It also said no recurrent hernia. Can anyone shed some light on this for me? Could they not know what to look for?

Sorry to hear about your circumstance. A complete sin I think how your surgeon gave you what seems is a runaround. Telling you your pain was impossible precluded any redress. Probably a ruse to cover his incompetence. I hope you get your justice.

Interestingly, Johnson & Johnson was pointed out by a general surgeon I spoke with as if I should be assured about the mesh he used for his surgeries. Scary that such doctors would apparently be so naive.

This case of J&J is just the tip of the iceberg not only because of such court cases but also negotiated settlements made by manufacturers to avoid the court, such as with C. R. Bard’s settlement of $184 million made in 2011. Given the potential long-term risks of mesh and the millions of surgeries made each year, we are sure to hear more and more of these litigations. If you haven’t sought legal counsel, you should in case you qualify for one of the many class action suits I suppose are already brewing.

I’ve been looking around online for one involving the Prolene Ethicon J&J mesh in the California area but so far I seem to only find ambulance chasers. Gonna keep looking though

Here’s some more for you to look over

https://www.masstortnexus.com/mass-t…plant-verdict/

This is similar mesh I’ve had in me for 15 years mine is prolene mesh. I’m hoping one day soon I can not only get better but get justice for losing out on the best years of my life 21-36, the loss of my military career and all the pain and suffering I’ve had to endure.

If you can make he trip to see me, I can examine you and then write a letter on your behalf that you can use to try to get the VA to let you go outside of the system.
Also, complain to your local congressman/woman.

Hey doc

I’ve been to the VSO and VA today.

the VSO says your letter must contain

* Nexus or origin of this pain – which is of course the operation in 05

* All secondary conditions relating to it (nerve entrapment, spermatic chord adhesion, etc)

* if there will be any long term issues related to the mesh

The VA told me

They have put in for gen surgery consult. once I schedule to tell them I want community care and THEN request my community care surgeon refer me to you and that is how and the only way the VA will cover it.(surgery)

Thoughts? Should I still call your office and schedule a consult? It could take months before the VA approves the surgery itself

I would have to let my gf know a good day since I can only drive around town but the good news is you’re only 3 and a half hours away and she’s already said she would be more than happy to accompany me!

Thank you Doc! I will call your office this week to set it up
