Help With Hernia Pain
Sorry you have endured so much. It sounds horrific. I had a laporoscopic surgery once and they accidentally severed my inferior epigastric artery. They used 4 clips to stop the bleeding. It took a very long time to heal
From that and more surgeries to clean up the adhesion mess and remove the clips.
I don’t know what the answer is to your specific problem but hoping dr Towfigh will give you some guidance. No one should have to live like that.
Things have to get better. You are too young for all these problems and such pain. Hang in there. Why don’t you use the search bar in this forum to find a good hernia surgeon in you area and at least go for a consult.
All the best and thank you for your service.

Femoral hernia
Hi Sue,
I was not instructed to take the milk of magnesia. I took Colace twice a day and Gas-X as needed. By day five I took the MOM and called the doctor. They advised me to take MiraLAX which I took this morning and finally had a BM.
I have not been taking painkillers for fear of constipation and making things worse. I only took one pain pill the night I came home from surgery. I have been living on regular Tylenol. My husband once had a fecal impaction from pain medication after a leg surgery. It was so bad that I had to rush him to the emergency room. I definitely did not want to go through that.
I’m slowly getting a little better each day and am going for my check up on Friday with the surgeon. My GYN also called to check in on me today which I thought was very nice.
Are you having your surgery tomorrow? Please keep us posted.

Femoral hernia
Thank you Chaunce. I guess my recovery is on schedule. I had a lot done. My concern now is that have not yet had a BM in spite of being on a regular diet. My surgery was Thursday October 20 and today is Wednesday the 26. I have cramps and gas pain but no BM. I have been taking stool softeners daily and even started with milk of magnesia Monday night and then again yesterday afternoon. My husband picked up Miralax for me yesterday so if nothing happens his morning I will take it.
Has anyone else had these problems after surgery. I know they gave me a lot of anesthesia. My surgery was 2 hours and they also gave me a lot of drying agents for nausea. I was so dry that I couldn’t speak and my throat and palate were entirely scratched and bruised from the tube. That’s finally starting to heal. The first two days was chicken soup , tea and jello because everything hurt in my throat as it passed over the bruises and ulcerations.
I called my doctors office yesterday and they advised suppository and Miralax if the other things I tried didn’t work by today.
I just don’t to mess up my healing with any aggravating BM. -

There are a few names in the above post “occult hernias in males”.
Dr Meyers at Vincera in Philadelphia
Dr Boyarsky in New Jersey
You can also check The American Hernia Society website.Hopefully Dr Towfigh can chime in here.

Femoral hernia
Thanks for reponding. I will look for your post. I’m happy everything worked out for you even if it did take a long time. I guess femoral hernias are less common and probably why they are missed so often. I only started to get the bulge a few weeks ago but the pain started about 5 months ago after an awful bowel movement.

Surgeon Secrets
I think I selected a good doctor. I guess time will tell.

Femoral hernia
Beenthere, how are you doing now? It’s only 4 days since my surgery and of course I am having some anxiety hoping that everything will heal correctly. Ive never had hernia surgery before but have had several laporoscopies for endometriosis, adhesions and hysterectomy. Each time u was told everything was ok and then pain would return and somewhere down the road I would need another surgery. My last surgery for adhesions was 12 years ago. That surgery was successful and helped so much with pain until
All this started A few months ago. It took a while
To even get a diagnosis. And that only happened at my own intervention and pushing for MRI and consults with different types of doctors. So when my surgeon says I should be fine now I am a little skeptical in believing him. It’s not good for me mentally but is very realistic. Only time will tell. The healing process is slow so all I can do is take are of myself and wait.
I hope you are feeling well.

Do I Have a Hidden/Occult Hernia?
I hope you get some answers soon. It’s awful that you have gone through so much.
I just had right femoral hernia repair with mesh on Thursday. They also found a hernia under the belly button and took care of that. I think that was sutured but not sure. They then went into the abdomen to check for adhesions and found my bowel was stuck to my abdominal wall. They removed that along with some other adhesions.
It’s only been 4 days and of course I have surgical pain but of course am concerned about how long this will take to heal and if all will heal well. Only time will tell. I had some
concerns with leg swelling so called my surgeon and he said everything went well and that I should be fine. I guess they all have the same response. Hang in there. I hope everything will resolve itself with time. I’m not really sure what the actual healing time is it that is considered normal. Im new in dealing with a hernia repair and it’s all very confusing to me. I am hoping the doctor can chime in and give her opinion. Please take care of yourself. I hope you get some answers and feel better soon. -
‘The Dissolvables’
I had my femoral hernia surgery done on Thursday and they placed a regular mesh. They also found an umbilical
Hernia and repaired that too. I don’t think they used a mesh for that. The surgeon said it was small.
I am hoping that everything heals according to plan. I don’t want to stress myself out over the mesh and pray I don’t have mesh problems down the line. -
Femoral hernia
I had the surgery done Thursday morning. They did it laporoscopically and found a substantial fatty hernia jammed into the right femoral canal. They removed and placed a mesh. They checked the left side and was ok. I also had a small umbilical hernia which he took care of too. My GYN was present for the entire surgery and once the hernia repair was complete they went into my abdomen to check for adhesions and found my bowel
Was stuck to my abdominal wall. They took down that adhesion along with a few other adhesions. I spoke with the surgeon yesterday who felt good about the surgery and said i should feel better.
I was concerned about some leg swelling and expressed that to the surgeon. he advised me to go to the ER of it didn’t get better from walking and elevation. Last night I decided to be safe rather than sorry and went to the ER for an ultrasound to check for clots. My father recently had some DVTs which went to both lungs so I was concerned.
Everything was ok and was able to sleep without that added stress.
I am sore and swollen which is normal. I have some throat and palate irritations from the tube but am doing my breathing excercises and clearing all that stuff out.
The first positive thing I noticed is that i do not have the sciatica pain anymore.
I am resting and hopeful
That each day will get better.

Femoral hernia
Hi seeker. I was hoping for an answer too as I’m in a similar situation. I have a thin frame -90 lbs 5’3.5 inches …so very slender and am 57. A year older than you. My doctor said he was using mesh and I am trusting him to use what he feels is appropriate for me. I wish i had more time to investigate but pain doesn’t allow me. I also wish I had some information to share with you.
I saw the other post and I think it’s a hacker.
Please keep us posted or if anyone has any information to share that would be great.

Inguinal hernia got big quickly
Thanks seeker. I had my pre admission testing today so am set for Thursday morning. I had an appointment with my GYN also and kept him up to speed on the surgery for Thursday. He was at a lecture this weekend so I didn’t get a chance to fill him in. He is going to pop in at the end of my surgery to take a peek in my abdomen with the surgeon after he does the hernia repair. I am going to have him check me for adhesions as I have a terrible history of them and also endometriosis which they don’t think has recurred. I just want to make sure from all ends. I have been dealing with this pelvic/abdominal pain for months and initially it was though it was muscle spasms and I was treated as such. I didn’t have the obvious bulge so diagnosis took longer. Things escalated quickly and the bulge is finally obvious. I think I am getting it on the left side too! Hopefully they will be able to check that once they get in. I really need to get this fixed and back to life as I have not been able to do much of anything because of the pain.
I hope you are able to do your pre ops and stay on schedule. Im glad that you do not have pain that holds you back. Walking 2-4 miles a day is impressive! I hope you can get this done and put it behind you. From your other posts you have mentioned it has gotten large quickly. Is it femoral? For some reason I think you said Inguinal in one of your posts.
You brought up a good point about the mesh. I am having one used for me. The odds seem to be for it. Fingers crossed.
Nervous but hoping to be rid of this pelvic pain. -
Inguinal hernia got big quickly
Seeker. I think we are both having the same surgeries on the same day. Mine is scheduled for this Thursday October 20th. I must say I am having a lot of pain and sometimes feel I won’t make it til then ughhh. How are you doing?
Are you doing it laporoscopically with a mesh? There’s so much mesh talk on here that it’s scaring me. I’m being cautious with eating because of pain with BMs and trying to keep things running smoothly and easily. Ive been taking colace but still find myself struggling and having to give up if I feel it’s going to cause more pain. Wishing you well.

Suffocation after Removal
All this is scaring me. I am having surgery Thursday and am in so much pain that it can’t be done soon enough. All these mesh issues and concerns are giving me more anxiety.

‘The Dissolvables’
I’m having surgery Thursday and didn’t even consider asking about a dissolvable mesh. I hope I’m not doing the wrong thing. Ughhhh

Abdominal swelling?
I think TEP stands for totally extraperitoneal. I understood when he told me. I think he has to slide in between the muscle and peritoneum and make sure that there isn’t scarring in the area under the scar. If he can’t slide through then he will convert to open surgery. I hope he can get in ok because I really want him to look at the left side too. It’s starting to bulge and I have pain there too. Not as much as the left.
It sounds like your doctor has a good plan for you. I hope that everything goes as planned at you get this behind you as well. When is your surgery?
I am in pain all day. My entire pelvic area hurts. I have pain in my groin and inside of my leg to my knee. By the end of the day I am more swollen and more pain. The two muscles on the side of my abdomen become hard and cord like. Those are the chiseled muscles that you see in professional athletes. On me they are there because they are over compensating. I hope that gets better once the hernia is repaired and heals. My abdomen feel so stressed.
I know I will have to strengthen my core.
Thanks for sharing. Wishing you well.

Got Hernia???
E101, I am in NJ too and am having femoral hernia surgery this Wednesday. I know how frustrating it is to get the correct diagnosis. I’m so happy you found this place and have gotten some answers to your questions. I did as well. I am in a lot of pain. I also feel I now have one on the other side as well. Waiting till Thursday is stressful. I can’t wait to finally put this behind me. Good luck with your surgery and please keep us posted

recurrent inguinal hernia

Abdominal swelling?
I’m having the TEP approach. Does that sound right? I do have a bikini scar from a previous emergency laparotomy that the doctor informed me if he couldn’t get through because of scarring there then he would not be able to do it laporoscopically and would convert to open surgery. I guess he’s being cautious and covering all grounds given my previous history of things going wrong. I also told him about my bladder injury during hysterectomy when they had to separate my bladder from my uterus leaving a hole in my bladder that needed to be repaired. I had to wear a Foley catheter for 2 weeks to allow the surgical site to heal! at least he is now aware there might be some adhesions there also.
I’m sure he’ll be able to get through and everything will be fine.
Just wanted to make sure the initial TEP approach is the way to go.
