My Bilateral Hernia Repair
Monday 25/09/2023 (day before my initial consultation)
Had a walk around Seocho to familiarise myself with the area and to see how long it would take me to walk from my accommodation to the hospital. 30 minutes was more than enough at a gentle stroll.Tuesday 26/09/2023 (Consultation day)
My appointment was at 2pm so I set off at 1pm to give myself plenty of time to get there half an hour early. Whether it’s a dental appointment, GP or hospital consultation I don’t think I should keep them waiting. I have all day, they don’t.My backside had barely hit the seat when Stephen Kwon came over and introduced himself. After that, it was fasten your seatbelt and go! An initial chat with Dr Kang and then straight into a barrage of tests. I initially felt a little uncomfortable seeing all the registration staff, nurses and medical experts literally RUNNING around just for me. When I finally got a minute to spare I realised that they were running for everyone! The pace is breathtaking. It turns out that this is a Korean culture thing (google “pali pali korean”) – more on this later.
As I was letting my brain slow down and take it all in I heard a voice from the row behind me speak in English. I turned to find a big, strong American guy sat behind me. He asked if I was here for a hernia op tomorrow and I said yes. He told me that he had his op a week ago and that I had nothing to worry about. He answered all the questions I threw at him before we were rushed off to the next round of tests. I missed the chance to thank him so if you are a forum member or just a lurker here I appreciate your time and support. Thanks, you know who you are.
We concluded the tests and after a detailed consultation with Dr Kang, where he informed me I had two indirect hernias, Stephen and I left the hospital and went our separate ways.
Wednesday 27/09/2023 (Treatment day)
My appointment was for 9am so like the day before I arrived in good time. I was booked in, taken to the 5th floor ward and put in a room with 3 other Korean guys. This turned out to be a good thing as I could watch the hustle and bustle around me and if I were to do this again I would definitely opt for the same. No sooner had I changed into my standard issue cotton pyjamas, the next round of tests and medications began. The previous evening I had decided to “mow the lawn” as the drawing on my advice sheet detailed.
I know one forum member stated in a previous post that he would prefer an all male supporting cast so if mixed nursing offends you, look away now!
The nurse explained (in Korean then briefly in English) that she needed to check my “topiary skills” then promptly peered down the front of my pants! I now understand when expectant mothers talk about their first experience of pregnancy. “Yes, that’s ok” she said. I’ve heard worse, I thought!
From then it was off to the operating theatre to be prepared for surgery. As others have said, you lie on the table with your arms outstretched and strapped down. Not unlike a crucifixion. I nearly choked when the nurse asked “when was your last supper?”.
I was liberally doused in an icy cold iodine solution and then in came Dr Kang. A final last minute chat and it was game on!
During the surgery, Dr Kang removed a large lipoma. He brought it round the operating table in a specimen tray and showed it to me. Not nice! After the op I was taken back to my bed and told to stay there for an hour. I fell asleep!
That evening I plucked up the courage to go to the toilet. As I was walking back to my bed Dr Kang was in the corridor. He asked me about the pain. But there wasn’t any. At least as long as I didn’t try to do anything stupid. It seemed that the pain control methods were working well so far.
However, during the night it came on gradually to a level where I needed to do something. I asked a passing nurse and she pointed to this clicky thing on my wrist. So THAT’S what it’s for! One click and a measured dose of “happy juice” would course through my veins and ease my pain. Or something like that. I’m not sure as once again I promptly went back to sleep.
As per every other healthcare system in the world I was woken at some unnatural hour so I could have my temperature checked. Didn’t the CIA ban torture like that?
Thursday 28/09/2023 (Discharge day)
A more welcome interruption came a short while later with a Korean breakfast. It may be an acquired taste for some Western palates so you should plan an alternative if you need to.Dr Kang came up to discharge me just before 9am and the nurses ran around like busy bees to make the final preparations for me to go. Do these lasses ever slow down? Then downstairs for the paperwork and out I walked into the sunshine.
I had planned to walk back to my accommodation as it’s just over a mile away and I could always stop if any pain troubled me.
To my surprise, the walking made it easier. To me, it felt like I was loosening a rusty bolt. Again, I wouldn’t win a medal at the Olympics, but I admit I was doing better than I expected. I only had problems with seizing up when I stopped once I got “home”.
If this is the worst it gets, then I’ll take it. Of course, there’s a lot more firsts to get through yet. I’ve had my first post-op bowel movement with no problem (too much information!) I guess in some part to the stool softeners I was issued but I haven’t had a coughing or sneezing fit yet.
That should sort the men from the boys.
As I finish writing for the night I find that I’ve seized up again. I slowly stand up and wait stooped over a while for my body to catch up. A few moments later and I empty my bladder and off to bed.

I wake up early and run through a quick health check. I have a slight burning sensation in the crease between my left leg and abdomen. This was the site of the smaller hernia but with the added bonus of the lipoma so the burning was to be expected.I whipped off the dressings and treated myself to a quick shower.
I stood in front of the full sized mirror, phone in hand, ready to snap a couple of tactfully aimed shots to send back to the missus.
The two scars were small and neat so I’m sure they will fade away in time. The bruising was minimal. I’ve got to be honest, whatever you think of Dr Kangs method, his craftsmanship is superb.
However, any initial elation was short lived. What stood in front of me was a vision of a guy 10 years older and not too pretty.
My finely chiseled abs were replaced by a bloated gut that would be more suited to a pot bellied pig. My “equipment” resembled a grapefruit with a button mushroom on top. Add to this my slightly stooping posture and you get the full sorry looking picture.
I replaced the dressings with ones I had picked up the day before and quickly covered everything up with loose clothing.
So what on earth had gone wrong?
Well, as I can see perfectly well now it’s just fluid pooling at the lowest point, my gut and scrotum. This also accounted for the discomfort when I walked too far. The weight was literally a ball ache.
During the day I walked roughly four miles, up and down quite steep hills, punctuated with wandering round shopping centres. Take my time, plenty of rest breaks and I should be okay. Head back to base and off to bed. Let’s see how I am in the morning.
Saturday 30/09/2023
Up and showered early with the intention of exploring the local area. All that changed at just after 9am with an email from the airport bus company. See, after a long haul flight and 1 hour bus ride I eagerly jumped off the bus… leaving my backpack on the overhead rack! Ah well, that’s the last I’ll see of that I thought. Couple of days later I had tracked down the bus company but couldn’t do anything more as I was due to go for surgery. It was also the 3-day mid autumn festival so pretty much everything was closed. I filled in an online form (in English) giving as much info as possible as well as a pretty good description of the bag, even though I say so myself.Minutes into the first business day after the holiday they fired me an email to say come and pick it up!
This entailed a 70 minute bus ride over to their garage with the lost property office on the second floor. On signing for my bag and looking suitably embarrassed I caught the 70 minute return bus back. All this sitting was doing me no favours and the growing sack of fluid in my underwear was aching as I walked. I just wanted to get home.
After a couple of hours lay on my bed listening to a Korean language lesson I built up the energy and appetite to go back out walking.
That evening I went back to my room, lay on the bed and chatted to my wife as I laid my “bits” out as comfortable as I could. Not a pretty sight!
