Had surgery October 2016… was 100% successful with absolutely no complications. The following is my post at that Time: I am really glad to post my positive IH repair experience. After doing many hours of web research over the years. I had my IH for over 14 years & prior to surgery it moved into my scrotum & around the size of a small cantaloupe. Hernia did not anoy me but did slow me down; was able to self reduce hernia if needed. I was truly frightened of surgery outcome especially with a lot of the problematic, chronic pain & mesh complication posts on this & other forums. I was scheduled for open IH surgery back in 2008 by a well regarded hernia surgeon. He said it could not be done minimally invasive but open (I do believe he did not do laparoscopic hernia surgery). He also said I better have IH repair soon (hernia was small at this time)
Because of a pre-op X-ray for open IH repair finding a lesion on my lung (possible lung cancer) had lung surgery instead. turned out to be a fire drill & caused from pneumonia & would have gone away if left alone without surgery. Because of a previous Laparoscopic Prostate surgery in 2001 robotic surgery was the only way to go for my surgery. I choose an experienced robotic surgeon Stephen Pereira MD at Hackensack NJ who has been doing & teaching robotic surgery since 2000. He has had done countless numbers of minimally invasive inguinal hernia repairs both both laparoscopic and robot assisted, on men who have had prostatectomies. Robotic IH Surgery took 3hrs & a progrip mesh was used. Results FANTASTIC. I did not even have to take any pain meds. Some soreness for about a minute in the beginning when I sat up out of bed in morning, it is no longer happening after 1 weeks time. I was even able to do work at my computer the afternoon of surgery & everyday after. I did turn black & blue, but had just minimally swelling (no full senoma that I expected)- I did constant icing & they have been normal within 1 week. It is now 2.5 weeks post surgery I am walking on treadmill & functioning quite normally as prior to surgery. I am following Dr’s orders & not lifting anything over 15lbs & I do not have the hernia!
So everyone reading theses posts should make sure to do their homework in making the right surgeon choice & think positive in ending up with a successful repair.

Having a Difficult Time Deciding
Why don’t you do the groundwork… find a Hernia Surgeon in your plan & suggest it to your primary MD… he will probably go along with you. Even show him why.

As with any surgery make sure the robotic surgeon has experience with the tool & has many robotic surgeries under his/her belt!

Have you made your surgeon aware of your post op condition… what did he say? What kind of hernia… inguinal?

3 weeks post op
Hi Mel,
Read your full post & you need to hang in & heal from your post surgical condition to be strong for your husbands treatment. I had inguinal hernia surgery about 4 months ago… it went fine although I still have a hard painless seroma (never had it diagnosed by MD but assume it is a seroma). The day that I had a consultation with hernia surgeon my wife was diagnosed with Stage IV Pancreatic Cancer… she is in a clinical trial & is progressing in a positive direction & glad I am hernia free to give her my full attention.
Both Mel & Sue, Life sure deals out many situations that we have to deal with… you need 1st to do good for yourself & continue to heal so you can help handle other loved one problems.
Best of Luck to all of us in these trying situations.. -
Having a Difficult Time Deciding
Stephent I was in similar position as you having inguinal hernia for over 13 years. Being fearful of the operation finally had it it done minimally invasive. Had great results. Make sure you choose to get the very best & experienced surgeon you can & get this hernia behind you to enjoy the rest of your life.

Can I recover alone?
Just make sure to ice the area immediately after surgery very frequently…. keep it going for 2 weeks. I had ice packs, frozen peas & event plastic frozen peas (available at CVS) on hand. Made me feel better & helped keep swelling down.

UPDATE: 7 weeks post surgery. Back to pre-surgery treadmill speeds & feeling great with my hernia repaired. Absolutely no apparent problems in any everyday tasks, physical activities, coughing & sneezing. Shaved belly hair is growing back & quiet bristly. After much pre surgery concern I had a ProGrip mesh repair & at this point in time have no feeling that I even have a mesh. If I feel real deep under the testicles I sometimes feel a hard bump that comes & goes if I am lying in bed… may be a seroma (does not have any pain & is not annoying)?
All I can say to forum members is make sure to do do your homework & choose an experienced & highly regarded surgeon & wishing you have the same post surgery & success as I have. -
Laparoscopic Hernia Repair Results
Thank you Dr Towfigh. Do not think it was filling space as hernia the size of a small cantaloupe went into the scrotum. That has never filled what I can fell is deep into the body at base of penis & behind the scrotum which remains soft.

I certainly will… this is the best hernia forum on the internet. The doctors & members helped me big time pre surgery. The post surgical tips also helped. A big shout out to Paul Szotek MD who’s knowledgeable extended advice really help me make a correct solution for my IH repair.

Post-Op Recovery: What to Expect
Make sure to read my post. http://www.herniatalk.com/hernia-discussion/1432-robotic-inguinal-hernia-surgery-fantastic-post-op.html
I actually worked from home at a computer for 4 hours same day of surgery. Still have not had to take any pain meds & it is 3.5 weeks post surgery. Have been walking on treadmill… it seems to make me even feel better.
I have come to conclusion that every case is different & the skill of surgeon is an important factor on post op pain. The progrip mesh that did not need tacks or sutures may also have been a factor in minimal post op soreness. I am following surgeons instructions & not lifting anything over 15lbs but everything else seems to be back to pre surgery condition& I do not have the hernia. -
Black & Blue from Inguinal Hernia
5 days ago had robotic inguinal hernia surgery for a large hernia the size of a cantaloupe going into the scrotum. Surgery took 3 hours. A progrip mesh was used to do the repair. So far no pain meds are needed. My post op results are much better then expected after reading the many negatives that have been posted on the internet & various forums. 3 days after surgery my scrotum area turned back & blue. After waking up this AM/ 5 days after surgery I felt some tenderness & soreness when touching the scrotum area (its raining & not sure if that effected wound)… seems to have lessened after doing my morning walk.
Needless to say I am happy that the surgery is over & so far seemed to have chosen the right surgeon… guess only time will tell for sure. I will keep future posts with my results. -

2nd Day even better then 1st. No pain no meds. I am walking & icing a lot.
I will try to post at least every 2 days on how I feel… then finalize the whole experience after I meet with surgeon in 2 weeks.
Hope I am one of the more positive experiences with mesh hernia surgery on the forum as they are far & in-between… although there were some that gave me hope pre-surgery.
Other positive experience forum members should reply to this post as we all know it is a frightening experience anticipating hernia surgery after reading all the negative experiences. -
Black & Blue from Inguinal Hernia
Appreciate the confirmation sounds like the surgeon told me the right thing.

Black & Blue from Inguinal Hernia
Thank you Dr. Shirin Towfigh… you nailed my condition. The surgeon also said that he does not want to get to close to the testicles… some of the sac may be left as a safety precaution. Would that be normal procedure & expected?

Black & Blue from Inguinal Hernia
FYI:Men: In men, the scrotum or penis may become bruised (black and blue) or swollen. The swelling, if it occurs, can become large. This represents that the space where your hernia once was has filled with fluid. This is usually from something called a seroma. If this is happening, there is nothing specific that needs to be done other than sometimes holding compression (or wearing a binder) can minimize the swelling. Make sure to notify your surgeon and show him this. Over time, in most situations, this will resolve completely spontaneously.

Black & Blue from Inguinal Hernia
Did not have surgery yet & I am scheduled for robotic surgery for large inguinal hernia. The Dr said that you can may have black & blue in lower areas as well as a seroma from surgery. Any members have similar experience?

Dr. Szotek just had a consultation with Dr. Brian Jacobs. He said I was a candidate for robotic or laparoscopic surgery… would not know for sure till he is able to check with a laparoscope & made a determination during the operation based on my healing from previous prostate surgery.
I found him to be excellent & liked what he said & reviewed my hernia.
I scheduled surgery with him & will post once I am post surgery.
Thanks for your recommendation & I sent him your regards.
