Thank you AJM for your reply. I also viewed the HerniaTalk session that Dr. Towfigh had that is posted on her facebook page. It was quite informative.

Dr. Mark Toyama was my surgeon. A wonderful & caring doctor. It was performed at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago – a fantastic facility.

@Dom – thanks. It’s so tiresome that he keeps on asking for more details, and if I don’t give specific details on the surgery than my success is just darn luck. Good luck to anyone needing to repair a hernia and hoping for the best to you.

It was a left inguinal hernia. I don’t know the mesh used – don’t have a clue. I run, cross-train, lift light weights, run, swim, etc. Had the surgery at 57 years old. I am not discounting others that do I have pain. I am just giving my experience. I was careful to choose a very skilled surgeon specializing in laparoscopic surgery.

I am just 2 years out from my left inguinal repair with mesh – robotic laparoscopic. After surgery I had minimal discomfort where I only needed some tylenol for a few days. 2 years out I am fine no issues. Doing everything as before as far as exercise.

Agree, rest up, and take it very slow, nice walks will help. Slowly introduce new activities. You made a great decision to get it fixed evidenced by the folded mesh. take care!

Whether you go with mesh or non-mesh, open or lapro, I would recommend seeing the most experienced surgeon. When I was looking for a doctor, I was concerned about the mesh issue. However I did not want to travel out of state due to the family. So I went with a very skilled surgeon in the area. He performed a laparascopic with mesh. good luck!

  • I have had robotic laparoscopic for a left side inguinal repair with mesh last Sept. 2018 @ 57 yrs old. Northwestern Hospital Chicago. No pain after the surgery. Feel 100% now with no issues. Glad I had it done.

I live in Chicago and I do not think that anyone does open tissue repair. They all use mesh. As far as not letting residents participate not sure how you could enforce. My doctor performed the main surgery and was assisted with residents. Maybe doctors could chime in.

Also, can you share the name of your surgeon? And if you know any additional details on the type of surgery (robotic, type of mesh, fixation, etc) if you know them?

Dr. Mark Toyama in Chicago. Robotic Laparoscopic. Not sure of the specific mesh.

I do not know my bmi. I am 6′ 0.5″. Weigh about 165lbs so I am definitely thin. I had a inguinal laparoscopic hernia repair with mesh done in September. No problems at all. Full recovery. Feel great. No hernia.

Thank you for reporting back your experience and the name of your surgeon.

Out of curiosity, was your hernia painful prior to surgery?

Keep us updated on your progress!

I noticed the hernia in April when it was very small. No pain at that time. It was progressively getting bigger. I’d say this was some discomfort once in the while. It was enough discomfort where I stopped running. A few weeks prior to surgery I had a more painful sharp pain that lasted a second or two.

  • great question. I had the laparoscopic surgery with mesh to fix an inguinal hernia two months ago. Before the surgery I had could not run because the hernia was causing me discomfort. I have started to run and workout and feel great. My doctor recommended that I keep active due to the health benefits.

I had laparoscopic robotic surgery done 8 weeks ago for an inguinal hernia on the left side. After the surgery I had minimal pain; only needed tylenol once in a while. I am pain free – back to 100%. Started working out ago a few days ago. My surgeon was Dr. Mark Toyama in Chicago (Northwestern Hospital). I highly recommend him.

I just had laparoscopic hernia surgery with mesh done about 7 weeks ago. No problems whatsoever. I can understand your concerns. I would recommend that you hold off on removing the mesh unless there is medical reason to do so and it is recommended by a surgeon.

I had laproscopic surgery just over 3 weeks ago. The surgeon can do it with or without the robotic tool; it all depends if the surgery room is booked. For my surgery the surgeon did laproscopic robotic. After the surgery I had minimal pain – only needed tylenol now and then. After 2 weeks pretty much back to normal. Glad I did it.

2 days after robotic laparoscopic inguinal (left) mesh operation. Chicago. I am 57 male in good health. So far so good. Minimal pain – only need to take Tylenol. Taking walks really helps.

2 weeks post surgery. Pretty much back to normal. No pain. During the 2 weeks I only had some minor pain the first week and only needed Tylenol. Cleared to run and exercise.

Good intentions I hope you feel better and get any hernia issues resolved. Well let’s not scare the heck out of me. Hoping my recovery goes well with no chronic pain issues! Northwestern is a great hospital by the way. Very pleased with the care. Only need to take Tylenol a couple times a day. Quickly gaining my strength for longer walks.
