  • Ah yes it does make working the area easier visually.

Is there any (adverse) effect to mans sexual capabilities… Some surgeons say none, some patients (sadly) say yes.

Also say they’re not just motor but also sensory – or vice versa!

  • Think I read it’s to stop testicle going up into channel and undoing repair. Something like that.

But seems a bit drastic. Maybe it helps keep their recurrence rate down? That seems to be important.

There arent many in Australia sorry to say. Could you travel to Korea for example?

  • Nothing scientific, but would have thought prolene was less likely to cause inflammation or adverse reaction. Have I got that wrong?

Again, not scientific but don’t see advantage in cutting cremaster or nerves etc.

  • Hopefully this will filter through to consultants who should inform their patients it’s a real risk and major issue

Some at present say it’s a (very) small percentage, even that it’s “imagined” and all in the head.

Once again Good Intentions, thanks for the analysis, good find, informative.

Hello Sheldon, theres quite a number on here, myself included, who are waiting rather than surgery.

When I first found out I had a hernia, I wanted it ‘fixed’ asap, however I soon started reading about the problems mesh can cause, sometimes same with tissue repair. Ive put off surgery through mainly being afraid and also not wanting to be in a worse situation than I am by having it.

Before I had a hernia, I assumed it was minor, easily fixed and low risk. I was wrong.

Personally, I am discounting mesh, and considering shouldice, Desarda or Dr Kang.

    It’s difficult deciding! Easier waiting!!!

  • Exactly. The last part sums it up very well. It’s obvious really that the different kinds of mesh may yield different results, that is pretty clear due to some recalls. A register is pretty obvious too. Why the reluctance?

Just don’t get mesh persists. I get thats it’s big business and easy but it’s wrong to callously risk leaving patients in pain when it’s a known consequence… Banned for vaginal for a reason. The problems, pain, difficulty walking etc are same as when used for hernia. Surely it should only be used when essential as there are alternatives which could be (re) learnt.

It doesnt need to be banned outright- as in some cases tissue repair cannot be effected. But restricted with more patient choice.

And the consequences/results of the different types of mesh should be recorded as I was surprised when Dr Towfight or one of her guests said in many cases the choice of mesh is not surgeons but hospitals and they are likely to be governed by economic considerations.

It needs regulating more and used less, imo.

Do you know if the hernia was direct or indirect, Ezzy?

    Thanks

Good Intentions, what is Dr Ramshaws story?

  • That should read “I would not want to suggest anything to make it worse”

  • Not had any surgery, yet, myself bjt reading about it, it can take quite a time for the area around the op to calm down. As was explained to me, on this forum, there’s a lot of nerves in a smallish area and they may be irritated hence itching and burning sensation in scrotum as on same nerve pathway. 2 weeks isn’t very long for it to settle after surgery.

Try googling general measures after hernia op to find relief measures you can do, if I remember righly applying ice pack, reclining/lying, massage may help. But google first as I would want to suggest anything that may make it worse.

Also, just dint think 2 weeks is long enough to not have after effect/niggles.

I haven’t had mesh but some people who post on here have and as far as I can tell the majority with problems who have had mesh removed are glad they did. The people who say they are still in pain or just as badly off after removal are a small minority. Choose a surgeon who has done a lot of removals and is experienced and hopefully your quality of life will greatly improve.

Thanks for keeping me/us up to date. Very glad it’s all going well for you. Do you know if you had direct or indirect hernia. You may have already said.

I’m thinking Dr Kang doesn’t cut cremaster or any of the nerves?

    Thanks Dr Kang

Is it possible to have both? On same side? Close together?

Thanks Good Intentions. I managed quite a fair amount of that video. Quite amazing and quite disturbing.

The unfortunate man didn’t seem in pain at all.

    Hello Stefan

I could be wrong but I think the nerves are not muscles so it could be the cremaster wasn’t part of the most recent operation you had. It sounds like it was nerves to me. So the cremaster may still as it was.

However I’m not an expert or that knowledgeable but there are plenty of those on here who are and will answer you more precisely soon I expect.

Thanks Hhelper, a relief. And appreciate the reply.

Do you know what happens when/if hernia goes into scrotum? Is it visually obvious? Are there additional symptoms?

    Thank you.
